NYC Mayor Eric Adams endorses Queens DA Melinda Katz for reelection

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz is receiving an endorsement from Mayor Eric Adams for her second term, according to a statement given to The Post.

“She is a real partner in making our city safer, and I’m proud to support her for re-election,” Adams stated. The mayor cited Katz’s understanding of the importance of working with police to improve policing while making the system stronger by vacating wrongful convictions and helping youth as reasons for the endorsement.

Katz’s alignment with several of Adams’ priorities, including tackling a surge in shoplifting and cracking down on perps selling ghost guns and illegal firearms on the streets, supports the endorsement.

Katz succeeded the late Richard Brown in 2019, beating City Councilwoman Tiffany Caban as the establishment candidate. Katz, who previously served as Queens Borough President and in the city council, is facing two primary challengers, Devian Daniels, a Democrat with a background as a public defender, and George Grasso, a former judge and NYPD deputy commissioner.

Adams’ endorsement could aid Katz in securing votes from black Queens voters, a demographic that assisted the Mayor’s victory in the 2021 mayoral contest. The primary election will be held on June 27, but early voting begins on June 17.
