Alabama’s Yellowhammer Cookie created by Mary Claire Cook
ALABAMA OFFICIALLY DESIGNATES STATE COOKIE
Montgomery, AL — The state of Alabama now has an official cookie, thanks to a fourth-grader’s culinary creation. The Yellowhammer Cookie, created by Mary Claire Cook of Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, was recently designated as the official state cookie via legislation signed by Gov. Kay Ivey. The recipe, which includes Alabama-grown pecans, peanut butter, and honey, was chosen by seniors at the school, who also pitched the idea of a state cookie to GOP Rep. Reed Ingram.
“Alabama doesn’t have a state cookie, but other states do,” said Kathryn Bandy, College Counselor at Trinity. “When our students learned about Alabama history, they decided to create a recipe that would capture the essence of the state.”
The Yellowhammer Cookie was chosen for its use of locally-sourced ingredients, including pecans from Mobile and Baldwin counties, peanuts from the Dothan area, and oats from central Alabama. The winning cookie recipe was approved by both the Alabama House and Senate earlier this month.
Recently, Cook brought a batch of her award-winning cookies to Gov. Ivey, who conducted a taste test prior to signing the legislation. “Sweet Home Alabama just got a little sweeter!” said Gov. Ivey after trying the cookies.

Mary Claire Cook’s creation: Alabama’s Yellowhammer Cookie
Alabama has a new state cookie, and it was created by a fourth-grader. Mary Claire Cook, a student at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, whipped up the recipe for the Yellowhammer Cookie, which has now been designated as the state’s official cookie via legislation by Governor Kay Ivey. The winning recipe includes pecans, peanut butter, and honey, and was chosen by seniors at the Christian day school as part of a lesson on Alabama history. The students pitched the idea of a state cookie to GOP Rep. Reed Ingram, who sponsored the bill. “We selected the cookie because it has three ingredients that really encapsulate the state of Alabama,” Trinity senior Russell Powell told WSFA-TV. Governor Ivey taste-tested a batch before signing the bill and declared that “Sweet Home Alabama just got a little sweeter!”
